It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

11 Dec

I’m a massive fan of Christmas. Not necessarily actual Christmas Day, but the whole build up and progressive level of excitement over the course of December. I love the décor, the food, the fun, the drinks, and the general vibe most people have around Christmas; like they’re letting loose after a full year of hard graft, the chance to have some drinks and show the people you love, how much you love them.

But obviously the best part of Christmas is the Christmas parties!! Let’s not lose sight of this!! I’m only doing one small Christmas party this year, as opposed to quite a few last year, but here are my tips for a fabulous, elegant Christmas party:

  • Do NOT decorate ANYTHING with tinsel. Come on. Tinsel may be cheap, but lets face facts. It’s tacky. Let’s try and forget it ever existed!!
  • Chose a colour scheme and stick to it. I’d say a maximum of 2 or 3 colours. I was talking with a friend of mine that lives in Los Angeles and she was saying that over in the States they throw every colour they can on their Christmas trees and this unnerved her. I totally agree! They also love tinsel. Enough said?
  • Feathers can make beautiful decorations on your tree. Multicoloured within your scheme. Lovely touch!
  • If you’re eating at your Christmas party, think about the places where people will collect/eat food. Spend some time thinking about how you can make these look beautiful as it’s a lingering point. Whether you decorate these areas with baubles, faux diamonds, glitter, bare branches, ivy, whatever you can think of – get creative! I’m a massive fan of a selection of candles on a dining table. Large candles, each on a circular mirror look lovely, and small tea lights in vintage glass candle holders. Perfect!
  • Try and get the best quality food within your budget for your guests. If you’ve spent a fortune on décor and the food isn’t top notch – they’ll only take the negative home with them
  • If you’re holding your party in a venue or restaurant, ask if they have any sister hotels where they could provide discounted rooms. Quite a few places will have a relationship with local accommodation – so it’s always beneficial to ask
  • Each year I spend quite a bit of time putting together Christmas playlists for my parties. I only pick Christmas songs that you won’t hear on the radio, and I mainly pick 1940’s, 1950’s or Rockabilly Christmas music! There’s something more elegant and ‘alternative’ about music from these eras – step aside for the evening please Slade!
  • Light some scented candles to give a real Christmas feel. And the BEST scented candles in the world are Diptyque. They’ve done a few Christmas candles including this one which is inspired by Christmas trees. Yum!

There you have it! Hopefully this will help, and if anyone out there wants to try and convince me to appreciate tinsel a little more they’re more than welcome

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE 🙂
